NZQA Unit Standard 31761:  Demonstrate knowledge of assessing, monitoring, and controlling risks to worker health in the extractive industries

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of assessing, monitoring, and controlling risks to worker health in the extractive industries.

Performance criteria

1.1 Legislation relating to worker health in the extractive industries is explained. Range includes but is not limited to – HSW Act and relevant regulations; roles and responsibilities of persons controlling a business or undertaking (PCBUs), officers, workers, other persons and workplaces; worker engagement, participation and representation; health and safety management system (HSMS); principal control plan (PCP) for worker health; hierarchy of controls.

1.2 A systematic approach for identifying hazards to worker health and assessing risks to worker health in the extractive industries is explained.

1.3 Worker health hazards in the extractive industries are described in terms of risk to worker health. Range includes but is not limited to – noise; vibration; airborne contaminants; manual handling; psychosocial hazards; fatigue; drugs and alcohol; temperature; hazardous substances; skin contaminants; biological hazards; atmospheric pressure; ionising radiation; non-ionising radiation; pressure injection injuries.

1.4 Requirements for worker medicals and methods for monitoring workers’ health, assessing exposure, to health hazards, and controlling risks are identified and explained for worker health hazards. Range evidence of monitoring methods is required for five worker health hazards. 1.5
